Renovating a home
A new tool! A big demolition hammer. Must say that even that one had a hard time with this wall. Bricks with open spaces. Lightweight and less material, all cool but mortar seeps into those openings and makes the wall a lot less sensitive to hammers…
The concrete floor is a worse match for the demolition hammer, let the old fashioned sledge hammer deal with those damned sturdy walls. Let’s build some muscle…
The old barn is showing more and more. At times somewhat anxious for the original outer wall, we peel away the inner layers until it shows in its full glory. Not for too long I guess as a single-brick wall does not really live up to the modern standards…
Yesterday we tore down approximately 12.7 meters of wall of about 2.3 meters high. Makes close to 30 square meters and almost fills a 6 cubic meter container. (all and all probably a little over a one person’s day)
After a rough measuring, I’d say there’s about 25 to 30 meters (57 – 69 squared) of brick wall left to do. Makes three days and as many containers. Pffffft…
And then there’s the concrete and tiled floors…
Yes, we made some progress this weekend. It feels like proper progress when walls come down. Maybe because of the figure of speech. Anyway, it already has been a satisfying weekend. Tomorrow coffee with cake (and who knows something stronger) with the new neighbours.
The previous container with bricks was picked up a tad early. It wasn’t quite topped of to my liking. So… the next one will have to compensate for that small mess up: We played Tetris all day…

The current container count is:
Each container is 6 cubic meters (not going to do the numbers in Imperial, dûh).
However, rubble container number two is filled already so that one will be picked up this Monday.
Let’s hope they don’t drive into the ditch again. Maybe I’ll get some pics of that to show later.
Tien dagen slopen. Na het schuren en opruimen is tien dagen geleden het slopen echt begonnen. De time lapse.
Van iemand mag het niet maar pip vindt het zo lekker op zolder. Warm, rustig. Toch een beetje verbazingwekkend dat met alle veranderingen de katten zo relaxed zijn. De voorheen-gevelkacheluitlaat is kattenluik, de balken zijn toegang tot de zolder en de weg wordt feilloos gevonden.
Elke keer als ze een deur doorlopen is het anders dan de vorige keer dat ze dat deden. Wat moet het toch een wonderlijke wereld voor ze zijn.
Met het sloophout kan je ook nog wel leuke dingen doen. Een kookeiland bouwen voor in de tuin bijvoorbeeld. De ‘echte’ keuken wordt steeds minder handig (geen licht, vol, stoffig)
Wat betreft de vloeren zijn we nog bij het makkelijke deel, het laminaat. Later maar zorgen maken over al dan niet bewapening in het beton en de degelijkheid waarmee de plavuizen gelegd zijn.
